Look at your closers’ calendars. Our read: the new-business call is the one your coaching system was built around. Bridge Group’s latest data says a growing share of closers now carry more than that.
The Bridge Group’s 2026 AE benchmark, published June 22, 2026 from a survey of 158 B2B companies, reports that 38% of account executives now have sole or blended ownership of renewal and expansion. The report says that share has nearly doubled since 2024, and that the role consolidation is most pronounced below $25K ASP. (Source: The Bridge Group, AE Models, Motions & Metrics 2026.)
If you run closers on high-ticket offers, check where you land. Your rep is not just closing new business anymore. They are on calls with existing customers, deciding whether to upsell, whether to save a wobbly account, whether to ask for the renewal at all.
Now ask the manager question: which of those calls did you listen to last month? Which ones does your scorecard even cover?
Our read: most coaching rubrics are written around the new-business conversation: frame, discovery, presentation, close. A renewal call is a different skill. The rep is not creating a problem for the prospect to want solved. They are defending a result that already happened, or failing to. An expansion call is different again.
That is our read, not a statistic. But the numbers around it should make any sales manager uneasy:
Put those side by side. Our read: reps are carrying a second job. Ramp time is already the highest in Bridge Group’s study history. And 64% of organizations coach fewer than half their reps weekly, while only 38% of organizations report consistent framework adoption across their managers. Our read: if the calendar is already too thin for new-business coaching, a renewal and expansion lane is unlikely to have been added.
Be careful with this one. Neither report says that unmanaged renewal calls are costing teams money. Bridge Group measures who owns renewal and expansion, not how well those calls go. The link between the two is a gap in what gets reviewed, and an argument we are making, not a measured result.
It is still the right question to ask. Our read: a missed renewal lands on revenue you already won.
